It was a chilly yet sunny afternoon. Most students were out playing sports or enjoying the last days before winter cold definitely set in for the season. Some had formed small groups and gone into the city for entertainment once their classes and other duties for the day were finally over. Jean felt hope washing through her at the sight of the innocence and intrinsic carefree spirit of teenagers. The elation and just joy of living those young minds exuded at times, when the woes of growing up as social pariahs was momentarily forgotten, was contagious, if only briefly.
In any case, Jean had an agenda. She had been worrying about Carol for a while and felt it was her duty to reach to her. No. Duty wasn't the right word. She cared about all her students and their problems. Lending a hand, if possible, was something she wanted to do, not just another responsibility that had to be dealt with. Maybe that's why Jean had waited for the right timing to approach the girl. That seemed as decent a chance as any, with most of the other kids her age either out or outside and just a few students remaining inside the mansion on such a good day.
Jean had been keeping tabs on Carol's mind for a couple of days, not actually reading it but rather trying to find the moment when she'd be unoccupied and most likely to be receptive to her. That afternoon she felt it was time to stop postponing the chat and walked to the girl's room and knocked softly on the door, then waited.

On most days like this several teenagers and kids were out enjoying their time in the yard, running around, playing, or just relaxing in the grass after a hard day in school. It was also getting close to the winter months so everyone was taking advantage of warmer weather. Before long, not everyone would go outside and might end up cooped up inside for a while. It was those times it got crazy, crowded, and noisy for some people.
For Carol, everyone being out of range meant less chances her powers would act weird and no longer have thoughts slip in and out of her own. Some were weird, some weren't bad but annoying, and others were just ones she didn't want to hear. It made her shudder sometimes the thoughts that came in from time to time as she had not fully learned to force them out or block them. Her use of telepathy was still meager compared to Jean, Xavier, or Emma. Quite frankly, she was beginning to consider asking one of them for private lessons since she still struggled to maintain her sanity and not have another incident like back in California. That had been a rough time and she still never knew how badly she had harmed others with her telepathic attack.
Sighing, Carol was fixing to go get something to eat before she would seek out one of the well known telepaths when she opened her door. Though it was at that moment Jean had knocked and the young Neyaphem found herself nearly running into the red head, making her look up with an apologetic look, "Professor Grey! I'm sorry, I didn't see you there!" She said quickly a little embarrassed for not realizing the knock a second before.

Jean's utter respect for other people's privacy, even that of her students, had prevented her from knowing that Carol was actually thinking of asking her or one of the other telepaths in the mansion for guidance. The tabs she had been keeping on her had been superficial and noninvasive. Years of practice and a higher level of telepathy allowed her that kind of finesse that would have been nearly impossible a decade earlier.
She greeted Carol with one of her famous kind, friendly smiles. The look of surprise on the girl's face surprised Jean, who had expected someone with any degree of telepathy to be hard to sneak up on. Still, the redhead remembered her own teenage years, when blocking all the overwhelming incoming thoughts was more like on and off switch that only became more selective with time and practice.
"That's OK, Carol. In fact, I was looking for you." She said calmly, as usual. "Is this a bad time? I was hoping you would join me for a walk." The soft, soothing tone she used made it clear the girl wasn't in any kind of trouble. Then again, it took a very elaborate prank or a major transgression to get Professor Grey to lose her cool.

For most telepaths it would be very difficult to sneak up on them, and most likely if she hadn't been trying to block out all the thoughts she likely would have sensed Jean's approach. It was a little embarrassing to admit that she had not known but at the same time she was sure Jean would understand, "I guess I should have sensed you even coming this way." She admitted with a sheepish smile before she stepped out into the hall beside Jean, closing the door behind her as she turned towards Jean, "And sure, I wouldn't mind a walk. Think I could use a little chance to clear my head, literally." Carol said with a soft smile, knowing she could probably use it.
"Though, you could say it was good timing I suppose Ms.Grey. I was actually coming to see if I could find you, Xavier, or Ms.Frost since I've been having problems with my telepathy still. The usual classes for our powers has helped me improve but...it's not enough." CArol explained to her as they walked, her tail flicking back and forth behind her as she glanced up at the red haired woman. She knew Jean probably knew this well after so long. Xavier no doubt did as well, but it still bothered her that she couldn't at least block out thoughts from others.

"You'll get there. Too much noise?" Jean asked with a knowing smile. There had been a few times when people had surprised her as well. Like when the Professor had put some mental barriers to her overwhelming developing powers or she'd been too intent on blocking everything. "I often walk to the gates through the forest when I feel the need to stretch my mind a bit without bumping into someone else's." That was her current plan for the afternoon and her mind hinted that much towards Carol's.
The comment conjured the mental picture of herself , the Professor and Emma Frost sitting in the same room having tea. It was a ridiculously fun random image that Jean repressed. This was a serious matter. "The basic courses are merely a base to start training one's powers, Taji. Especially when it comes to gifts like ours." Jean said as they made their way through the mansion. "Most courses focus on directing your powers, which is useful for most mutants, but we need extensive additional training on repressing them." She explained. "This is what I wanted to talk to you about. Perhaps you could benefit from some particular lessons." Jean suggested gently.

"Too much noise is an understatement. When they first manifested last year it felt like I was going insane, even my mother couldn't do anything and I knew she was worried." Carol confirmed, vaguely wondering how her mother was doing since she had left. Following the incident when she had been unable to control her new powers things had gotten bad and she had never known what happened to her mother after that. Nor had she ever heard from her brother who had taken off sometime ago before that had happened. Both days had saddened her but she kept such things back knowing letting go of her emotions has been the cause for her last outburst.
"A walk usually helps. I always go to the gardens because it helps me focus on one thing and block everything else out." Carol explained as she looked back at her teacher, "And such lessons would help. Most especially being able to keep my telepathy in check if I get upset. There are times I can't, and each time others get affected or hurt." Carol's tail twitched slightly, showing her dismay at the lack of control she had towards her power. Everything else was simple, physical powers that needed no control except basic function of the body, just on a greater level. This one...this needed fine mental control, control she seemed to lack to some degree. "It's not in my nature to purposely hurt people Ms.Grey, and I worry I'll seriously harm someone." She admitted with a sigh.
